Was Doctor Who racist?

Well not really, no. Finding an Asian actor could be difficult given locations and actor timetables, and besides they maybe couldn't find an Asian actor who went well with the part, therefore casting a non-Asian actor was there only choice. It's not racist, it just had to be done.

At first I thought this was going to be referring to the portrayal of Toberman in Tomb of the Cybermen as a black slave. For the record I don't think that story is racist either.

Good point about Toberman, but he was more a servant.

Toberman was supposed to be deaf, but thanks to a few lines getting cut a sympathetic story about a man being tempted to cure his disability at the cost of his mind, we ended up with an accidental stereotype when the original intention lost its context.
